UNC-Chapel Hill was established in 1793 as the first state university in the United States .

In 1989, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was rated the top public college in The Insider's Guide to the Top 25 Colleges by Tom Fischgrund. Approximately 23,500 students are taking advantage of "the best educational bargain in America " that combines "social, cultural and intellectual diversity with outstanding faculty and academic excellence." UNC-CH, on its 730-acre colonial style campus, offers 70 bachelor's programs, 90 master's level programs, 60 doctoral programs and 4 professional programs.

Programs rated in the top ten nationally include: chemistry, journalism, classics, statistics, sociology, music, and recreation administration. U.S. News and World Report, in 1990, ranked the UNC-CH Business School as 17th in the nation and the Law School as 21st.

UNC-CH Libraries, ranked first in the Southeast and in the Top 15 nationally, supports academic programs with more than 3.6 million volumes.

Beyond the academic offerings of UNC, the UNC Tarheels have captured the spirit of the region as top athletic performers. Basketball games are offered in the Dean Smith Center where nearly 22,000 seats are filled with fans. Concerts by renowned performers are often held there in the calm between home games. Men's lacrosse and women's soccer teams have also been recent national champions.
